Medical providers take aim at prescription abuse

Chuck Gass pharmacist has no way of knowing if a customer needs a legitimate pain medication or sold Shopping around North Georgia other companies in search of illicit high.

It can better understand the intentions of Tennessee customers who come for his gold ring, Ga., pharmacy.

Tennessee has followed a program trace, the quantity and type of drugs prescribed for patients, but not Georgia.

“It is surprising that a lot of different people and different doctors, pharmacies and the same thing, every day of the week,” said Mr. Gass, owner of the pharmacy at the gold ring shop.

It’s called Shopping doctor-patient visit when several providers of medical services to collect revenue, but to use or sell.

Abuse of the pain medicine, as oxycodone account as the nation’s second most widely used drug - that behind marijuana use - after the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy.

About 6.4 million Americans report nonmedical use of drugs according to the agency.

Timothy Smith, 16, a gold ring High School Student, who died on 1 March-prescription of a drug overdose. A 15-year-old faces manslaughter and other charges, according to police, said he flew oxycodone pills of his grandfather, cancer and patients, it gave Mr. Smith, and two other youths.

Dr Frances Barnett, Chief of staff at Grand View Medical Center in Jasper, Tennessee, implements a monthly Drug testing policy for their patients older than one year.

“Tell us, I have a recipe for OxyContin, and you return to your medicine to be tested, and she’s not here,” said Dr. Barnett. “Well, where is he? If you can not take, they can be sold, and this will be my practice. ”

Dr. William Hays, Cleveland, Tennessee, “he said to watch the Base chat Shopping sign of the doctor, patients such as new travel long distances in his office or in patients who speak discontent with a previous Provider.

“When they arrive, and they have a broken foot, it is one thing. But when they come and say they owe their Lortab, they are likely to be driven out of my office, not very happy, “said Hays.

An unhealthy experiment

The federal government emblem of the program to ensure health care for the elderly, the implementation of an experience that in the case of privatization to produce results disturbing.

Officials from the State in Georgia and across the country to continue to report that unscrupulous agents, commissions, aging Americans schröpfend dropping traditional health coverage and bear additional costs for the purchase of private plans, that are not to their specific needs.

And they are not the only ones to pay extra Medicare - meaning American taxpayers - pays companies at the same time collecting, on average, more than 12 percent of the services to manage, as it would cost the Government to manage them own applications.

About 9 million of the 44 million Medicare beneficiaries switched to discuss the plans. Over the past two years, only 3 million Medicare beneficiaries - about 100000 of them in Georgia - have signed. The marketing plans to reach its peak this weekend, because Monday is the last day for this year.

Experience with the plans, also known as Medicare Advantage, derive significant results in the debate on the roles of government and private insurers in the search for ways to cover the 47 million Americans n ‘ have no health insurance, and millions of As just over it.

Unfortunately, these lessons are not very encouraging.

Traditional Medicare is financed by a payroll tax, with the government, hospitals and physicians pay directly for services. Recipients are automatically for stays in hospital, and pay a premium, heavily subsidized by the Government for the visit to the doctor.

Another part of the disease, implementation of just three years, which encourages the elderly to private insurance to purchase prescription drugs.

Medicare Advantage programs be, the elderly in order to coordinate all its research on the benefits Americans - hospitals, doctors and drugs - a plan. Unlike traditional disease in which recipients can choose doctors and hospitals, Advantage plans often asked to patients with a panel of doctors and hospitals and pharmacies. Often, the plans also promise a wide range of benefits compared to traditional Medicare offers.

With dozens of plans on the market, teasing, the costs vs. benefits - or try to compare them with conventional coverage - can be a difficult challenge. This is especially true for the poor, elderly Americans, who do not hesitate defied objectives of ethics distribution employees.

On average, the distribution of these plans to get a commission of $ 350 to $ 600 for each applicant. Their customers, too often, plans to connect who are not responding to their needs, or that the wind-up costs more than his pocket when they spent in traditional Medicare.

Just for Georgia Insurance Commissioner John Oxendine said his office is justified, 40 to 66 complaints since 2006 about Medicare Advantage plans, the sale and distribution activities. About one-third of them were sent to the Division of the Division of fraud, he said.

An agent faces felony charges for the registration of persons injured or disabled in the brain or knowledge without their consent.

The stories are similar Aufschweißen the whole country. Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice Sue Bell Cobb told the New York Times recently that their 83-year-old mother, opt for one of the projects, because they thought that dental care. It was only after it had decreased its traditional Medicare plan, she learned that the family doctor they have to see for years was not part of the plan.
